Do we runaway from healing?

The word healing sounds so peaceful. It automatically makes me want to rest my shoulders and give a sigh of relief. Yet, when I had to heal something within myself, I wanted to run away as fast as I could in the opposite direction.

To heal ourselves means we must be brave enough to face our hurts, pains, wounds and inner demons. If I had the option of entering the woods at night, lit only by moonlight, to be accompanied by a bear or my hurts and wounds… you bet it, I choose the bear!

We replace the bear with addictions and distractions because nothing could be scarier than healing. The “bear” will never bring us back to wholeness.

Society portrays the strong as emotionless, tough skin and hardy. This makes me think of the quote from the movie Shrek “You're so wrapped up in layers onion boy, you’re afraid of your own feelings.”

Strength needs a new image. If someone told me they spent a whole year going to counseling to face their inner demons and wounds, I would say “wow, you are brave! Keep going!”

If you are getting the courage to heal, do not do it alone. You can heal in a safe space, with no judgment and where tears are seen as strength not weakness. Counselors, therapists and healers are all here to support you in that journey and I promise you… when you brave the wilderness, you leave so much lighter. It’s not yours to hold anymore.

If you are looking for a counselor or therapist, Psychology Today is an amazing website to help you find one that takes your insurance: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us.

If we are honest, maybe we are all unhealed? I mean we did all have a childhood and even in adulthood we get hurt. Ask yourself what is it that you are running from? Then let the tears flow.

You are brave.
